The
Port of Tripoli has a modern Cruise/Ferry
Terminal, which is in a good state. Other
ports are more cargo oriented. See our photo
gallery.
Shore
Excursions can be operated from the Ports
of Tripoli for Tripoli City Tour & Museum,
Sabratha, Leptis Magna, Villa Silin, and
Ghadames by charter flight), Al Khums for
Leptis Magna and Villa Silin, Derna (not
suitable for large vessels) for Cyrene and
Apollonia, Benghazi for Cyrene, Apollonia,
Tocra and Ptolemais and Tobruk for WW2 Cemeteries
& Relics.
It
is not recommended that passengers make
their own lands arrangements. This is not
for safety reasons but because of the language
barrier and a rather basic infrastructure.
Furthermore, all signs and road directions
are in Arabic.
Credit
cards and debit cards are not of any use
whatsoever except in the Corinthia Bab Africa
Hotel in Tripoli (as at 2004). All transactions
have to be carried out in the local currency,
the Libyan Dinar. Exchange rates tend to
change unexpectedly so check for the latest
rates.
The
import of Israel flags and alcohol are prohibited.
Do not attempt to even try to risk taking
a small bottle of any alcohol.
There
is no immediate safety problem. No occurrences
with fundamentalists to report. It is policy
that a tourist police escorts the buses
and is present at the sites that groups
of tourists visit.
Dress
Code is conservative as in most Arab countries.
Women are allowed into mosques for sightseeing
purposes, covered up properly but shoes
remain outside as usual. We did not experience
any of the well-known harassment, which
the tourist gets traveling to other North
African destinations.
At
most sites and museums a photographic charge
of 5 Libyan Dinars and a video charge of
10 Libyan Dinars is levied at the door of
each site and museum. We strongly recommend
factoring the photographic charge in the
price of the shore excursion to avoid long
queues at the entrances.
Do
not photograph anyone unless you ask permission
first. In Mosques, it is suggested that
you do not point your camera at anyone as
this is regarded as offensive.
It
can rain in Libya so do be prepared. Sunglasses
are useful not just because of the intense
sun but also to protect the eyes from sandy
winds.
