This visit to villa
Silin can be combined with that of Leptis
Magna since it is only 15 min away from
the Leptis site or as a 3-hour stand-alone
tour.
The Plutocrats of Leptis built themselves
fine villas, rediscovered by 20th century
archaeologists. One of the finest is the
well-conserved Villa Silin, a few kilometres
away from the port of Al Khums near Leptis
Magna.
Villa Silin was discovered in 1974 under
dunes. The location is superb over looking
an expanse of sandy beach. The 20-room
villa hosts mosaics and surviving bits
of fresco. There are hunt and scenes of
public spectacle, including acrobats and
a chariot race. So-called Nilotic mosaics
provide an exotic touch, with pygmies
fighting crocodiles. More peacefully,
there are storks and ducks, and sea-nymph
playing with a triton.
